Phelps & Ensign’s Traveller’s Guide Through the United States: Containing Stage, Steamboat, Canal and Rail-Road Routes, with the Distances from place to place. Illustrated by a New and Accurate Map of the United States.

New York: Phelps & Ensign, 1838, first edition, 16mo, 53 pp., large folding colored map, entitled: Phelps & Ensign’s Travellers’ Guide, and Map of the United States, Containing the Roads, Distances, Steam Boat and Canal Routes &c., measuring 43 x 57.4 cm, which folds into the original red gilt and embossed roan case. Case a bit rubbed, some spotting and foxing to text, contemporary ownership signatures, the map is in good clean condition, with some separations at fold joints and minor loss in the small inset map of New Orleans.

First edition of a traveler's guide second only to Mitchell's guides in popularity. This edition is considerably scarcer than later issues. The map stretches from the Atlantic coast west to the eastern edge of the great plains and Texas, portions of Iowa and Wisconsin Territory. The map details roads, rivers, towns, villages, Indian tribes are also located. There are small inset maps of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, New Orleans, Mobile, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Charleston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, and the District of Columbia. The northern part of Maine and the south part of Florida are also shown in insets.
