American, likely a member of a western tribe he stands with an elaborate
headdress and hair pipe breastplate, circa mid-1850s. Plains Indians began
wearing the hair pipe breastplate after 1850 and were extremely popular later
in the 19
th century. The image is dark, in a contemporary gutta
percha case, case with several repaired cracks, else good.
