"Dear Nell,

Have been working night and day for the last three weeks. Don't believe I have had 4 hrs sleep the whole time... I tell you this Alaska air is the best tonic... I honestly believe Nell that this move was the smartest thing I ever did...Or crowd is an ideal one all good natured and jolly and each more than willing to do his part. Our boat got into Skagway about 12:30 on Friday and immediately began discharging freight & passengers they worked all day long loading into the ships boats and unloading onto the smooth beach where the "Klondikers" 300 strong carried it up above high tide.

You know we made the mistake of having our goods all billed to Dyea or Tya which is six miles above here. We found that the Dyea pass was not so good a pass as this one and so we tried to get our freight destination changed to Skagway, the captain said he could not let his crew go into the hold and work over 200 tons of freight just to pick ours out but that if those of the miners who wanted freight back in Skag. From Dyea would go over to Dyea and unload the Dyea freight for him he would stop over at Skag. On his way back and load our freight so we, Harry, Bert and I with 15 others went over to Dyea and into the hold of the vessel, worked one day & night and next forenoon and got back to Skag. Sunday and got our stuff in shape and are now located about a mile back in the woods in a fine place and are beginning to get our stuff up to the base of the hill, four miles from here, where the pass proper begins.

Joe Magill & Robinson got in today and Joe says he never got into a scrape that he enjoyed more, still all are not feeling as we do. Crouch from South Bend is in the other tent now completely tired out and discouraged and wanting to sell out. Kepner who knows him is trying to encourage him... Five fellows are starting back on the "islander" which returns to civilization today.

Camp life is a very busy one some one else is now doing the work properly belonging to me in order to give me time to write this letter. Tell all my friends who expect to hear from me that that I don't think I can possibly find time before I get to Dawson City which will be about Aug. 28 to Sep. 10...

We all start across the divide tomorrow (Wednesday) with boat and supplies so that we can start Johnson and Kepner right through to Klondike the rest of us will take our time..."
