Pershing, John Joseph (1860-1948)
American army commander, born in Linn County, Missouri; graduated U.S.M.A.,
West Point (1886). On frontier duty to 1898; served in Cuba (1898) and the
Philippines (1899-1903). U.S. military attache, Tokyo (1905-06), and with Kuroki’s
army in Manchuria (1905); brigadier general, U.S. Army (1906); in command of
Department of Mindanao; suppressed Moro uprising (1913); commanded
expeditionary force sent into Mexico in pursuit of Francisco Villa (1916).
Promoted major general (1916); commander in chief, American Expeditionary Force
(1917-1919); promoted general (1917); chief of staff U.S. Army (1921-24);
retired from active service. Author of My Experiences in the World War
(1931; awarded Pulitzer history prize, 1932).
