"Auger stated that he went to California for the sake of curiosity and love of travel, rather than to mine for gold. He left France for California by way of Southampton on the British steamer Dee to Chagres, then across the Isthmus of Panama and to San Diego and San Francisco on the steamship Tennessee. He described both the southern and northern mining districts and included short accounts of Baja California pearl fishing and a lynching in San Francisco. He found thousands of Frenchmen stranded in California." - Kurutz.      Cowan II, p. 23; Howes A-393; Norris 154; Rocq 15679; Kurutz 24; Sabin 2376; Wheat, Books, 7
