Joseph Cummings, an Adventist elder and minister, claimed in 1852 to have received "new light on the commencement and terminus of the periods of Daniel." He declared that the "disappointment" of 1843-44 was the result in William Miller's choice of 508 A.D. as the initial date, not in his general calculations. Cummings believed that the periods of Daniel's prophecy, the 1260, the 1290, and the 1335 days ought to be calculated from 519 A. D. when church and state had been united together under an edict of the Emperor Justinian. Accordingly Cummings believed that as a result of this new chronology the resurrection would be accomplished in 1854 A. D.
