Manuscript poem in tribute to William Lewis Herndon commander of the Central America which was sunk off the coast of the Carolinas with le loss of over 400 passengers and one hundred crew members. The vessel was also carrying some 30,000 pounds of gold, the loss of which contributed to the Panic of 1857. 

The poem is signed at the end J. A. Johnson, Feb. 2, 1858. Holten High School. Accompanied by another manuscript poem by the same author.
