Photograph Album and Scrapbook of a tour from Florida to Washington State: via Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington, dated 1939

Album measures 7” x 11 ½”, bound in brown cloth, stamped on front cover “Fotofolio”, worn at tips, edges, and corners, includes 104 black and white photographs measuring 2 ½” x 3 ¾” to 5 ¾” x 4”, plus 13 real photo postcards; and 53 unused postcards; dated 9 January to 1 June 1939. The photograph album was kept by someone who was a party of two couples that traveled from at least Florida across the southern section of the United States to the west coast, then north along the Pacific coast to Washington state, stopping in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington.

Description of Album:

The 104 black and white photographs show the photographer/s on various excursions. The photos include scenes in various places in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington State.

While in Florida the photos taken include: St. Augustine; Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Seminole Indian Village, the Islands and Canals of Miami Beach, Alligators, Key West, Ernest Hemingway’s Home; Royal Palm State Park; Clearwater Beach; and Silver Springs.

Alabama photos include a photo from Mobile. Louisiana photos include a number of views of New Orleans including the French Quarter, the Jackson Monument, the Cathedral, a lady of color, African-Americans sitting about on the waterfront; City Park; Spring Fiesta Parade; French Steamship; Cemetery; residences (wooden shacks) occupied by African Americans on the levee; photo of the levee itself; and Chalmette.

Arizona photos includes a number of images of the petrified forest; the Grand Canyon, including mule train when they went down into the canyon;  Indian mud hut; Carlsbad Cavern; and a photo of Jim White who discovered Carlsbad Cavern.

In California the party took various photos at Yosemite National Park including North Dome, Big Grizzly Tree; Mariposa Grove; El Captain; Cascade Falls; various water falls; Mirror Lake; Glacier Point; Yosemite Valley, etc. They also visited San Francisco where they took photos looking north, east, southwest, and south from Telegraph Hill; they also took photos of foundation work on Shastor Dam.

The final leg of their journey the party travelled up the coast to Oregon and Washington, where they took photos in Oregon of  Port Angeles; Crescent Lake on Olympia Peninsula, Portland; Crater Lake, as well as a couple of photos from Washington.

There are 13 real photo postcards and 53 unused postcards. These are of photos and images from the various places they visited along the above explained itinerary from Florida to California, stopping in Alabama, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington.
