Excellent Vernacular Photograph Album of Renovo, Pennsylvania and Surrounding Area circa 1889

oblong quarto photograph album which contains 46 mounted photographs on 23 cardstock leaves, the images measure 4 ¾ x 8 inches, original cloth covers, leaves somewhat warped, some damp-staining to blank margins of several leaves, photographs in very good condition, each identified in contemporary red ink on blank margin of mount beneath image.

An excellent vernacular album compiled by s skilled and talented local photographer. He has provided an interesting composite photograph which serves as a "title-page" for the album, he calls it "Leaves of Memory," and includes a view of the Renovo Reservoir as well as a self-portrait. (see image)

The views depict the town of Renovo, interior and exterior views of buildings, railroad bridges, the car repair shop, lumber camps, scenes of hunting and fishing in the surrounding woods and streams, fire engines and other scenes of town and domestic life. There are also several photographs of a major flood of the West Branch of the Susquehanna on June 1, 1889 which caused severe damage to the town. The images are generally well composed well executed photographs and in addition are all identified.

Renovo, a borough in Clinton County, situated on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River about 125 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and 25 miles northwest of Lock Haven. It was formerly situated on a branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Philadelphia and Erie Railroad established a large car and repair shop at Renovo (hence it's name) which was subsequently taken over by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The town was situated in a bituminous coal region and near fire-clay deposits.
