The author lived a life of considerable adventure he served in the Field Train of the Royal Artillery during the Peninsular Campaign. He fought with the British in Washington, D. C., and Baltimore in 1814 and during the New Orleans Campaign. The book contains an account of travels on the Mississippi and a good account from the British perspective of the invasion of New Orleans in 1815. Chesterton also saw service as a volunteer with the army of Columbia under Bolivar. He was later governor of Cold Bath Prison.
