Courtlandt, New York: Geo. Hayward's Lithography, nd. circa 1830-35
black and white lithographed cadastral map of a portion of the city of Utica, the map measures 16 3/4 x 22 5/8 inches. The map has later manuscript additions and notes in color. The map was backed with muslin at an early date, some minor creasing, wrinkling and foxing, else very good.
This early lithographed map delineates the area between Charlotte and Broad Streets and the triangle formed by Washington, Genessee and Fayette Streets in the center of Utica.
John Fish, the City Surveyor, drew the map of Utica issued with the 1828 Utica City Directory. George Hayward would go on to have an extensive career printing the maps, views and plates which were issued in the in the long running series of Valentine's Manuals of New York City. Hayward was active in New York City from about 1834-1872, which helps in dating the present map at some point prior to 1834.
The map is not listed in Phillips, Maps, or on OCLC. See Ristow, American Maps and Map Makers, p. 257.
