Letter written by James L. Kelly, the master of the Missouri River steam packet Miner, which traveled on a regular run between Yankton, Dakota Territory and Sioux City. Sioux City is located in northwestern Iowa, where the boundaries of present day, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota converge. The letter is written on the ship’s pictorial letterhead (see image above).

Kelly informs his friend, after discussing personal news, that he expected to “remain in Sioux City for some time. Have got my boat out on the ways for repairs. Will run her from here next summer unless summer unless something else turns up…” An unusual letterhead.
