Paris: Chez Lejay... 1770, first edition, three volumes, 12mo, [4], 330; [4], [1] - 344; [4], 455, [5] pp., in original drab paper publisher's wraps, uncut and unopened, each volume with a half-title, on the verso of which is a list of eight French booksellers where the work could be purchased, engraved arms on the title-pages of each volume. A few dusty edges but very clean, with only minor defects to the wrappers.
Scarce work in the trade which contains case histories of illnesses especially as affecting black men, and separately black women. There is a good history of illnesses on the island and of those brought in by various ships. The volume is of considerable interest for its discussion of local botany and its uses in medicine including the use of spices and pineapple juice. The work contains in a section of the third volume formulas for the preparation of these botanical remedies in a section headed: Abrégé d'une Pharmacopée Américaine, ou Formules Des Remedies quit sont onvincees dans les Maladies qui attaquent les Habitans de Saint Domingue. A scarce and important work on tropical medicine and botany.
