Manuscript Document, Alleghany County,North Carolina, October 6, 1865, attesting to the character of Absalom Gentry,
a former slave
octavo, single sheet, inscribed in ink, written in the hand of one Wesley Gilham and signed by him as well as two other witnesses, very good condition.
The document reads:
"State of N.C. Alleghany County
Oct the 6th 1865
We certify that Absalem Gentry has been a good and faithful servant at Rebecca Gentrys in Alleghaney Co since the
surrender of Gen Lee and has managed well and made all the grain he could we think his wages is worth as mutch as any black man in the county we have not heard of him running a bout mutch he has been thare till a short time ago.[sic] Wesley Gilham
